Second Sabbath

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” (Mark 1:35)

In any activity there needs to be a time when you step back and take a breath.  You can imagine that for Jesus those times were few and far between.  He had a lot going on.  The Scripture tells us that once Jesus and His disciples were not able to eat a meal because of the constant demand.  But as busy as we can be, there is always a need to step back and take a deep breath.  This is part of the purpose of Sabbath.  Jesus knew how important it was to have a little “Jesus” time.  It was time for fellowship with His Father.

This time was so important that Jesus did what was necessary to make sure it could happen.  He got up early…really early.  Now, I don’t know about you but that is not how “time off” usually starts.  Many would stay in bed…sleep in…can I get an amen?  Jesus, not only got up, He got dressed and went some place!

Once again we are reminded that Sabbath is not about being extra lazy or just doing nothing.  It is about taking time to pause before “Our Father” and enjoy His presence…a little “Jesus” time for ourselves.   Many times in our busy lives in the Washington Metropolitan area this kind of rest takes some effort.  What are you doing to make time for Sabbath in your life.  Warning it may mean getting up early!

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen
